If you own a Playstation 3, you are lucky in that it is a gaming console that has far less problems than many competing systems. However, that said, no electronic machine is ever always completely free of troubles, and it is very likely that from time to time you will experience any one of the common issues listed below. Fortunately, many of these issues that you will find occurring with your PS3 can be repaired easily at home with the right knowledge and resources.
1) Your PS3 Will Not Turn On. This can be the result of several different issues, some more serious and some very simple to fix. One of the most common causes for why a PS3 will not turn on is due to loose cable connections or the cables being connected incorrectly. Often a cable will appear as if it is connected well, but a quick jiggle of the cable will actually show that it is not making the proper connection. So be sure all your cables are connected well and that they are in the right place.
A second cause your PS3 will not turn on can be an issue with the power cord to the PS3. If you have a PC that uses a power cord identical to the one supplying power to the Playstation 3, you might want to try switching the cables and see if you can get the computer to start up using the PS3 power cord. If it does, then you can rule the power cord out as an issue for the PS3. Otherwise, you may need to borrow a friends power cord, or invest in a new one to test to see if the power cord is at fault.
If neither of these two solutions work, you may also want to try resetting your hard drive on the PS3. It may be that the hard drive was knocked out of alignment, and simply removing the drive and reinstalling it can at times solve this issue.
2) Your Playstation 3 is Freezing During Game Play. This is commonly caused by overheating. You can check the PS3 to see if it feels as if it is hotter than usual. If so, you should immediately shut down the system and let it cool down completely. When you restart the unit again, make sure it is well ventilated when using it.
If you find your PS3 is frequently freezing or crashing during game play, it may also need to be cleaned internally. Dust can build up inside the PS3 over time, causing it to overheat and then freeze. You can use a can of compressed air to assist with cleaning the interior of the Playstation 3 thoroughly.
3) Red or Yellow Blinking Light Problems. This is also, unfortunately, a common PS3 problem and it can signal several different issues with the PS3.
