Digital SLR Cameras have brought high quality photo gear to everyday people. Of course a professional quality SLR camera is only one part of what you need to take truly great photographs. You will also have to know how to make best use of your camera and that can be a bit more confusing with a DSLR than with a point and click.
I believe far more important than understanding the technical stuff is having an artistic eye. A sense of what will make a good photograph. A great example of this kind of “good eye” can be seen when looking closely at these Original Nature Photographs by one of my favorite artistic photographers.
As far as which camera to buy I can recommend the Canon Rebel XTi. in particular. IIt is a fantastic SLR camera that has worked for me without any issues for approximately two years now. It’s also rather cheap by the cost standards of professional quality cameras. You should be warned that those standards are quite high, it is about $700 and that’s without a lens!
As you educate yourself more on the subject of high quality cameras you will find that the lens is extremely important. If you are used to point and click cameras then you are probably used to thinking that the megapixel count is the most important thing but that’s not the case with DSLRs at all.
With SLRs, the lens is what makes the largest difference in the quality of the photos. Really the subject of lenses is too deep for me to cover here, I simply want to make sure you are aware of how important they are and that if you want to get really serious about taking great photos you will have to look into the topic deeply.
Just like with all other skills, you will only become a expert photographer with lots of study and practice. You have to read all about photography and then you will need to take lots of photos testing out all of what you’ve found out!
