After inventing ingenious versions of hoovers, hand driers, wheelbarrows, trolleys and plent of other things, inventor James Dyson now gives us the unique bladeless fan.
Although he officially launched the product in 2009, it was only available to buy a couple of months ago and already looks like being a massive success. The fan works by pulling in air through the base and forcing it out of small slits in the the circular section. This allows the fan to keep a contast, solid blast of cool air despite the lack of blades.
With no blades, the fan is extremely safe and would stop those worries about having left the desk fan on with children around.
The only real negative part seems to be the price, costing somewhere around the staggering £200
mark. It is said that you pay for what you get however, and with the summer being so long and any half decent air conditioner costing more than that, the price doesn’t appear to have put off consumers all over the world buying the new fan. According to shops like Marks and Spencer and John Lewis, sales of the fans have increased 4 times and represent one third of all the fans sold in the last 30 days. It’s not surprising either given the heat, as most fans just blow hot air around the room if I didn’t have my 12v dehumidifier the home office would quickly become unworkable!
Other benefits to the new fan include an efficiency level of 15 times greater than a normal desk fan, making it an ideal solution in the current cultural, economical and ecological climate. The new fan is also far easier to clean that any other fan you’ll come across and is the ideal addition to any family home.
Dyson did have to defend the invention however, after it was suggested that a Japanese company had come up with the idea 30 years earlier. Despite this though, the new bladeless fan has recieved both consumer and industry praise and looks like it could be the gadget to have for summer 2010. All i’m after now is Mr. Dyson to design a good air purification system, as mine is always breaking, and we’re set!
